Alberta Darling to Retire Dec. 1, Setting Up Battle to Keep Super Majority

-

Republican State Sen. Alberta Darling is retiring on Dec. 1, 2022, setting up a battle to keep the supermajority in the state Senate.

Darling’s term ends in 2025. The election to replace her would likely be in the April election. She has served 29 years in the state Legislature.

Darling was in the state Assembly before being first elected to the state Senate in 1993. In 2011, she defeated a recall attempt.

People praised Darling for her decades of leadership.

@SenDarling has been such an influential voice for conservative reforms in Madison. One of the most decent people I’ve ever served with. Fair, passionate & incredibly smart on complex public policy. Proud to call her my friend – we will miss your sense of humor and kindness!” Assembly Speaker Robin Vos wrote.

CJ Szafir tweeted, “Wow….Agreed. She’s been one of the most influential lawmakers in state government and will leave giant shoes to fill. She has a massive legacy in the Wisconsin conservative movement.

Statement from Alberta Darling

“Today, I announced I will be stepping down from the State Senate effective December 1, 2022,” Alberta Darling announced on Nov. 23, 2022.

“I am forever grateful to the people of the 8th Senate District for placing their trust in me for so long.”

Alberta Darling added: “Together, we worked to make our great state even better. Thank you for your support, guidance, and wisdom over the years. I look forward to spending more time with family and friends. On, Wisconsin”
